So, to spark conversation on this forum, I thought I'd post a question...
What LARPs has everyone played? What did you like about them, and what were not so great?
I'll start -
My first LARP was Second Edition Vampire the Masquerade. I can't really think of anything I disliked about it; the rules were simple for a first LARP, and the storyteller was awesome. I had a Toreador character named Lily for about 5 years...she was wonderful to play. Also in that game I was able to dabble in the Garou rules, as Lily became mortal again, and through a series of tests ended up coming into her inheritance for werewolf...CRAZY!
I've played Three Fates Gaming's Divus Ex. My first encounter with it was very confusing, and I really disliked the GMs...they took the game a little too far and would not go out of character to answer simple rules questions. This was at a convention, so I guess you get all types.
I run a Changeling: the Dreaming LARP, however, there are so many rule changes, it may as well be a different game; I still like to give credit where it's due though.
I have played V:tM new Requiem rules, and I have to say, I don't really like it. I don't like the cards, I like the old R-P-S system.
I've played several LARPs at conventions...
I think that's about it. I tend to stick with WoD stuff, but I'm always interested to see what non-WoD stuff there is out there.

Re: Oh the games we play!
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 7:00 AMHeh, well I am certain Achbar has a bunch of different systems under his belt, but I am very new to it. I have played NERO once and thought it was ok though I didn't care as much for the combat system; I just wanted more reality. I also play in the SCA, so I am wanting to try and combined the two. I LOVE persona play though sadly you see very little to none in the SCA. I am wanting to run a LARP that has an SCA’ish combat system using boffer type weapons instead of rattan and have characters that are loosely historic/fantasy base and you stay IC… anyway not sure if that is what you are asking but that is what I am working on :o) -

William, it sounds like you're looking to reinvent the Kanar system. Why not check out your local group and see what they have to offer. -

Apparently I was under the mistaken impression that Kanar was a larger organization. I've played with troupes in Ohio and Illinois in addition to here in Michigan. Perhaps you'll be the forward thinking soul who brings the phenom to your neck of the woods, :o)

Hope this helps. If nothing else, you may be able to incorporate some ideas into your own game.
Cheers!

Re: Oh the games we play!
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 4:01 PMI actually just got back from a weekend at NERO Alliance Caldaria (though now I believe it's just called Alliance, they dropped the NERO), at which I play a gypsy caster, merchant, singer and dancer. She's still pretty low-level but I absolutely love playing her so she'll be around for awhile. :)
I visited a friend down in Georgia recently and got to play a similar character at SOLAR Clanthia, which is based on an old edition of NERO so I was nominally familiar with it. Great, great game!
