Neverdale is a home-brewed world using rules inspired by the Mind's Eye Theatre system (Rock-Paper-Scissors for combat, etc.). It is a fantasy-medieval type of world with faeries, demons, dwarves and elves. The game is being run by Michael Birkes, who has run several games at GameStorm, as well as an 8-year long Vampire Chronicle.

This event is free, and all experience levels are welcome. Due to some of the mature themes in the game, we do ask for players to be at least 16 years old.

You have a choice of playing a major character (heavily in the plot) or a minor character (kinda in the background, good if you'd like to observe more, or if you're a little shy, or it's your first LARP and/or you don't want a major role). Just let us know what you'd like to play.

We are still finalizing the venue, but the game will be between 6:00PM-11:00PM on January 3rd. In order to ensure you have a character, the ST/GM will need your RSVP by December 29th. You can RSVP at our event calendar: http://shaglarp.com/modules.php?name=GCalendar&file=viewday&y=2009&m=1&d=3&e=15
If you'd rather not register on the site to RSVP for the event, you can also email admin@shaglarp.com and let us know you'll be there, and what type character you'd like to play. Your information will be passed to the ST.

To view more information about the game, characters, and system, please visit this forum thread for a great write up: http://shaglarp.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=137&sid=501d7afff1f875ed53b0ce953927d8f7

Next month (February) will be a Divus Ex game where you play the gods of love!

Hello everyone,

I want to formally invite you to our first Character creation night for our new game, Shadows Crossing. As a good HST I wouldn't want to just feed you to the wolves without giving you an opportunity to make it out.

A little background on our story thus far:

Since the fall of the Domain of Humbolt to the Garou, Sonoma County, a new domain founded by the disposed Prince of Humbolt, has been on the brink of lawlessness. The Garou were nearly successful at their attempt to destroy every prominent member of the Domain of Humbolt. Only a few were able to escape their claws. The Scourge of the domain was able to keep several of them at bay while the Prince, a Malkavian elder, and the Sheriff, a Gangrel, made their escape to Sonoma County. The Scourge, thought to be lost to the Garou, later met up with the surviving Prince and Sheriff near Windsor.

His Highness took refuge in Santa Rosa and claimed the territory in the name of the Camarilla. Though kindred of the Ivory Tower have repopulated the area, all is not calm. Since the claim of the Prince, there have been questions regarding whether or not the Prince is fit to serve and keep the interests of the Camarilla safe from the encroaching flea filled vermin that are the Garou.

In more recent nights, the Baron of Vallejo and a few of his party, have come into the domain to "talk" with the Prince. More and more, the Anarchs are showing in force at the sporadic court gathers the Prince has called and have even mustered enough courage to attend gathers off of Elysium. Further, as is the lot of Kindred, there have been stirrings and rumors abound.

"Why are they allowed here?"

"How have they managed to stay for so long?"

"What exactly is the Prince thinking?"

The true story can only be revealed in time.

---
Please be welcome to our new game and join in on our character creation nights:

December 22nd
December 29th

January 5th
January 12th

All of the character creation nights will be held at the Round Table in Rohnert Park at 6:30pm. See below for directions.

Our first game will be held:

January 19th at Stevenson Hall at Sonoma State University

There will be a token of the storyteller's gratitude as an added benefit to those who come to the character creation nights and the first two months of game.

Have a great night and we look forward to seeing you soon!

So, to spark conversation on this forum, I thought I'd post a question...
What LARPs has everyone played? What did you like about them, and what were not so great?
I'll start -
My first LARP was Second Edition Vampire the Masquerade. I can't really think of anything I disliked about it; the rules were simple for a first LARP, and the storyteller was awesome. I had a Toreador character named Lily for about 5 years...she was wonderful to play. Also in that game I was able to dabble in the Garou rules, as Lily became mortal again, and through a series of tests ended up coming into her inheritance for werewolf...CRAZY!
I've played Three Fates Gaming's Divus Ex. My first encounter with it was very confusing, and I really disliked the GMs...they took the game a little too far and would not go out of character to answer simple rules questions. This was at a convention, so I guess you get all types.
I run a Changeling: the Dreaming LARP, however, there are so many rule changes, it may as well be a different game; I still like to give credit where it's due though.
I have played V:tM new Requiem rules, and I have to say, I don't really like it. I don't like the cards, I like the old R-P-S system.
I've played several LARPs at conventions...
I think that's about it. I tend to stick with WoD stuff, but I'm always interested to see what non-WoD stuff there is out there.

The Isles Await You!

The heart-world of the mighty Hardestann Empire, a Kingdom that spans the Isles, has discovered its ninth and most auspicious Isle yet- Asylum.

It is an idyllic garden of peace and tranquility. Reports from the First Team are most positive about the potential resources to be found on Asylum. Join the explorers and colonists who will soon set out to make this new Isle their own.

Discover "Next Level" Live Action

The Isles is designed for the mature player who is looking for more comfort, more complexity of plot, and higher production values. Its a simple fact - most live action events fall short of the potential that could be achieved, and we at Asylum Productions are committed to turning that potential into reality.

-------------------------------------------

The Isles campaign, conceived by Ford Ivey, is one of the most open-ended LARP campaigns currently running. While most LARP’s have a single ‘flavor’, i.e. medieval fantasy, gothic horror, techno, etc., The Isles is open to almost any ‘flavor’ you might seek. The first two events have seen everything from Elves, to Gypsies, to Pirates, to Old West Prospectors. The campaign has a detailed production system, which can be a players focus in and of itself if you do not care for combat roles. As far as combat goes, The Isles is run under the basic concepts of the Nteraction LARP system. All manner of standard ‘boffer’ weapons are allowed, assuming they pass a safety check, and there are allowances for archery and firearms.

The campaign has an extensive back history, which can be used to create your character backround. Or, with the approval of the Plot Team, submit your own concept for a race or character concept. There are almost no limits to the scope of The Isles.

We have 4 events planned for the coming year.

May 19-21, July 7-9, Sept 22-24, Nov 17-19

When President Bush ordered troops to Iraq, he probably never imagined that he would be ultimately be responsible for what very well could be the very first D&D convention/game day ever held in a war zone. Ziggurat Con, being held June 9 from 1200 to 2100 hours at Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase, is open to all allied military personnel and civilian contractors in Iraq.

KBR and MWR (the army’s Morale Welfare & Recreation Department) have graciously allowed service members to use part of the Community Activity Center to hold the Game Day. The Ping Pong room will be set up for RPGs (Role-Playing Games, not to be confused with the rocket propelled grenades which share the same acronym), and the DVD Movie room will be playing Anime Movies all day in support of the event.

The largest problem with running a Con in Iraq, of course, is that there are no local stores or game publishers, and few game books on the post. Even dice are in short supply, with many soldiers breaking the unwritten taboo held by many gamers and sharing dice. Thankfully, many game publishers have also lent their support, and have agreed to supply game products to help the Con along. aethereal FORGE, Sovereign Press, Final Redoubt Press, Goodman Games, Paizo Publishing and Steve Jackson Games are among those that have thrown in their support for the convention. But Amberson indicated that the soldiers could definitely use more.

"This convention is currently in drastic need of prizes and giveaways for the troops," he said. "Everything donated will go directly to the troops, or to MWR to use as loaner books for the soldiers."

For more information, contact SPC David Amberson at the following address: david.amberson (at) iraq.centcom.mil

Donations can also be sent to SPC Amberson directly at the following address:
A Co 86th Sig Bn
APO, AE 09331

They’re planning to run the following games (and will be happy to get additional games):
Babylon 5 RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, D&D, D&D RPGA, GURPS, Historic Miniatures Battles, Magic Tournament, MechWarrior Miniatures, Rifts, Shadowrun, Starship Troopers, White Wolf System-Vampire, White Wolf System-Werewolf, XCrawl

Got any game books crowding your shelves that you never use? Here's a great cause to donate them to. Spread the word.

We would love anything we can get. We do have a White Wolf game here, but not much in the line of books, mostly the older editions. We will have a small LARP game that we are trying to get permission to have happen at the Ziggurat for which the con is named (A LARP at a historical site that has been around since Biblical times - WOW). Gamer related material would be absolutely awesome!! It takes 2 weeks or less when shipping Priority, so you still have time.

This remodel will provide Mortalis Games with an integrated photo/image gallery, downloads section to better organize our available products as we complete them, a classified ads section so members may sell or trade gear with others once Mortalis LARP is running, and much more functionality than we had before.

We're still doing some set-up work, so please excuse the "dust" and "debris." The site should be fully operational by March 26, including a much improved site skin/theme.

Work is also continuing on Mortalis LARP. The two (and the largest) sections of the rulebook – Magic and Combat, Weapons, and Armor – is continuing. The magic section is about half complete and the combat, weapons, and armor section is about a quarter complete. The goal is to complete these in unison and then release the rulebook to a small, select group of people for proofreading, editing, and clarification before play testing begins.

I’ve been a LARPer for over five years and a table top gamer for even longer. Table-top wise I’ve played many, many games and have run my fair share as well. LARP wise I’ve done NERO Alliance, Vampire (Camarilla and non-Camarilla), some Amtgard, and participated in some local LARP groups (both modern horror and fantasy-medieval). We have some confirmed entries from several other Countries. All North American LARPS need to support this endeavor by making an effort to help their players create submissions. The LARPY's Award Show will be held in April 2006 in Los Angeles CA. Don't miss this chance to be part of the LARP Awards!

Wail and Hell Met, To Strange and Strangers all !

I'm posting this in hopes to recruit some adult LARPers, Vampires and Creatures of the Night as conspirators in a little scheme of mine.

Friday, September 9th and Saturday the 10th there will be a Live Action Vampire Game in Portland, Maine that will be small in numbers but large in scale and especially in terms of what Hollywood likes to call "production values".

We aren't playing this game in a gym, some hobby store, or anyone's basement... this is all taking place live, in interior and exterior venues around the city.

The theme is one of "The Embrace", and our victim is already chosen. What we're looking for now are more vampires... Here's the story thusfar...

Portland has existed in a virtual fog, clouded from the minds of kindred and kine alike... It's thought of, but one finds it extremely difficult to contemplate what might go on there or ever finding a compelling reason to go there... Except of course for tourists, fattened mundanes whose lifestyles are bland and banal but who provide a steady stream of sustenance for the local bloodsucking population.

The reason for Portland's obscurity can be found in the workings of it's mysterious Prince... many rumours abound as to her age and lineage, and few can truly lay claim to having seen the reclusive figure, but the fact remains... Nothing enters or leaves the city without her knowledge and blessing... And the Prince keeps the city vieled from prying eyes.

The Prince has kept an even balance in the numbers of kindred in any clan, and has forbade the siring of any childre... Until now. Someone has been chosen for the Embrace, and the Prince has decreed that the clans will each try and seduce the Chosen to their own bloodline. One night has been given for this task.

On the second night the Prince has declared an Elysium to be held in a nightclub, The Vault, where the ranking Primogen will each be able to make their argument for the Claim of Progeny... But who will tip the balance of Power with this new embrace ? Will the victim have a choice in choosing his own fate, or will the capricous Prince dictate his own whim?

In what I think is a first for LARP games, this event will be filmed throughout both nights. "Scenes" will be played back (projected) at the Rave and the Elysium for your out-of-character enjoyment, and to help create a cinematic scope to the game.

What can you expect ?

DATE: Friday night, September 9th will primarily be an outdoor event preceeded by staged encounters around the city of Portland. Each clan will be alllowed to meet with the Chosen in a venue that best represents them (I've already selected the sites and made arrangements for player's to be there). This will be followed by a Rave event outdoors.

LOCATION: I'm tapping my mundane influence to get us permits to an old fort sitting right on the edge of the Atlantic. The battlements are about 15' high and made of granite slabs some 4' thick and the gunports look right over the water. There's an inner promenade inside the seawall, and behind that is a hill that's actually an earthwork bunker riddled with tunnels and rooms that made up the offensive support network of the fort. The hill towers over the promenade by what looks to be over 50'... It's an incredible space that reeks of history and atmosphere.

THE EVENT: I'm gathering permits to allow us to use the fort for firespinning and firebreathers who will be performing for us, and either drumming or electronica music. The Rave will be where the clans come together for the first time en masse, as a prelude to the following night's official Elysium.

DATE: Saturday, September 10th will primarily be an indoor event

LOCATION: A Portland nightclub. The venue in question was a bank in a former life... The kind of old time bank with marble floors, 30' high cielings and mahogany panels... Not too shabby. There's also a balcony that wraps around most of the place which is much more intimate and offers plenty of plush seating, another bar (one of 5) and a couple of pool tables. The seal on the deal is the VIP room I rented... It's the original bank vault, complete with steel door and exposed locks, tucked away behind the deejay stage which you must climb up on to enter the VIP. The VIP holds about 20 comfortably at a time and you can do just about anything you want to back there, well away from the prying eyes of the norms out there. Maine stops serving at 1:00am. Sadly, even I can't do much about that on such short notice. What I can and have done is arrange for the club to be open for after-hours until 3:00am.

THE EVENT: The Elysium and the Choosing of the Sire

(PLEASE NOTE: I have JPEGS of both venues that I can send to you if you provide me with a non-Tribe email address - Unless you can tell me the secret of sending attachments through Tribe)

ACCOMODATIONS:

CAMPING:
We'll send you details on nearby campsights if that option appeals to you. There are 3 within 30 minutes of the game, all for under $20 per night.

HOTELS
There's a motel 6 nearby that fluctuates from 40 - 70 per night, and we have a group rate deal at a Fairfield Inn for $109.

In one of the campaigns I go to at the wonderful world of S.O.L.A.R., one of my characters is a make up race, meaning I have to paint my body to meet the racial requirements, etc. (I'm sure this is familiar to at least most of you, right?)

I have to paint tattoos, with a tribal look, on 50% of my exposed skin. Problem is, when it's hot outside and I start to sweat, parts that I expose, like my tummy, tends to smudge together and then I've got this blob of Ben Nye all over me.

What's the best kind of make up to use? Would Set Spray prevent this, or lesson that outcome?

During the winter months when only my face is showing, pretty much, I tend to use Liquitex acrylic paint. It stays, it looks good - more like skin that's actually tattooed - and it's relatively easy to get off. Plus, if I touch it with my hands, I don't get powdery smudges of it on my fingers/gloves.

So what's a larp chic to do?

Anybody have any suggestions or recommendations on brands or other products that could help?

it's a manifesto for the future of Live Roleplaying, written some years ago (eg we can assume they failed to fully resalise the manifesto). They're extreme views, but with a lot of sense in some of them.

I'd be interested to hear what people think.

What do you want in an ideal LARP

My Ideal LARP will have a definate element of fiction, be it wizardry, monsters, or what-have-you. I am not going to play a game of reality in a different setting. That isn't LARP, its Improv Theatre, which is all good if you like that, but, LARP's to me are Games.

In Games there is a point and purpose. A mechanic aspect, hopefully not too cloying or complex, but not vacant either. I want to have to use my imagination when viewing my fellows. If a 5' 2" woman wants to play a 7' tall male Troll I say strike the balance...sheetrocker stilts, padded clothes, and blue makeup IS enough for me, and I don't care is she can run. I do not know how it is elsewhere, but we don't, in my experience, in my area (the Pacific NW USA...about twice the size of the UK) have a LARP held in an area where running was going to happen at all (including Cons) anyway. We do have a guy who does exactly as I have described.

I DO want skills, backgrounds, and abilities roleplayed and researched. Don't claim to be a Elizabethan scholar if you don't even know who Shakespeare is. Don't play a doctor unless you can tell my arm from my ass. Now, some have a greater fudge factor than others. In the previous example, a doctor is easier, because I don't expect surgery to be the center of the game. That can be handled off stage just fine. But if your going to argue the angst of Macbeth versus the angst of Hamlet, don't give me some OOG bullshit about your Academics traits. It slows the game to a crawl and kills it for me. Use some sense. Any skill you want to claim, at least read the damn encyclopedia :-)

I don't expect a wired stage so that players can fly. I DO want props and such...even boffo ones would be keen.

I want adults interested in RP, not combat fests. BUT, I want the occasiomnal combat where I can pretend I am Bruce Lee, Conan, and the Terminator all rolled into one :-)

I want a story...continuous. I want history and a future. I want mystery and intrigue...problem solving and such.

Finally, I want to be able to shut it off on occasion and have a beer.

Thanks

So, I have an idea for a chronicle I've been wnating to run for awhile. It's set towards the end of the Dark Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. It's multigenre, and is based on the legend of the founding of the city of Karlsruhe in Germany. Historically, it also covers the transition from walled to unwalled city. I want to try to judge a level of interest before I start running it, though. If I have a large enough interest, it will be full multigenre, with Vampire, Changeling, Werewolf, mortals, and possibly even Mage (although more limited). The primary genres, however, will be Vampire, Changeling and mortals out of Laws of the Hunt revised. There is a semi-set storyline based on the mythology surrounding the foundation of Karlsruhe, but players ultimately will make the story. It will be a short-term chronicle, as I will be moving to Claremont, CA, in late August. Any feedback?

Was over the easter bank holiday. A new system, Maelstrom has been set up by some of the people involved in the Omega system, mbased on a radically different set of ideals to most LRP out there.

I guess that the first thing they though was 'let's create a novel system that still has elements of fantasy so people know what they're in for' They achieved this.

The second assumption that they made is that people actually want to interact with whatever is going on. and in fact, the best way to create interactive plot was not to write any. Instead they have created a rich and varied backstory, ripe with the fruit of conflict, and simply let the players get on with it.

This resulted in greater depth of play than anything I have experienced previously, though it took a period of adjustment before we realised that we had to get off our bums and start making things happen; a lot of people have, in the face of heavily plot-based systems, developed a reactionary playing style and so they have to re-learn this a bit.

That a campaign could develop such depth in it's first event bodes well for the future.

Next event is in July
